At the time, Elvis' January 14 concert was broadcast live via satellite to viewers in Asia and Oceania, with a delayed broadcast in Europe that same month.In light of the need to avoid programming conflicts with the 7th Super Bowl, as well as the fact that the movie "Elvis on Tour" was playing well in movie theaters across the country, NBC decided to air a 90-minute version of "Aloha from Hawaii" featuring a bonus performance that was recorded for the mainland U.S. broadcast on April 4, 1973. The album became Elvis' first number one in several years, reaching a high of number one on Billboard's pop and country charts. It was the fastest-selling album to reach number one on the charts in Elvis' career.The 50th anniversary edition of Aloha from Hawaii was produced by Ernst Jorgensen and remixed in its entirety by Ernst and Grammy-winning recording engineer Matt-Ross Spang from the original 16 CD1 of the 3CD set features the original January 14, 1973 performance, CD2 features the January 12 dress rehearsal with a live audience (recorded in the event of a technical mishap during the satellite broadcast), and CD3 features a recording of Aloha from Hawaii" (including "Blue Hawaii," "Hawaiian Wedding Song," "No More," and "Morning Rain"), and CD3 contains bonus tracks specially recorded without audience participation for the U.S. broadcast of "Aloha from Hawaii. The accompanying video disc, "Aloha from Hawaii," marks the first time the film has been released on Blue-ray. Also included are insightful liner notes by lifelong Elvis fan and luminary Randy Lewis, and a 28-page booklet featuring rare photos and rare items.
